Safety tips
on ropes and twines natural and
synthetic fibers
There are two types of fibers used in the construction of
ropes and
twines, natural and
synthetic. The most common natural fibers are
Manila.
Sisal, Jute and
Cotton,
while synthetic
fibers such as Polypropylene,
Polyethylene, and
Polyester have become the most popular in today's market.
.: In choosing a rope always consult the manufacturer when personal safety
is involved or possible damage to property
could occur.
.:
To prevent kinks, always remove rope properly from coils.
It should be uncoiled from the inside. If
the rope is on a reel, it should be removed by pulling it off the top while the reel is
free to rotate.
.:
If a rope
suddenly fails, it can recoil with sufficient force
to cause physical injury. So
never stand in line with a rope
under tension, specially if it's
a synthetic rope since it has higher snapback tendencies than natural fiber rope.
.:
Avoid using any rope or twine that shows signs of
aging, wear and tear. Replace it.
.:
Never expose natural or
synthetic rope to chemicals such
as solvents and acids.
.:
Heat and elevated temperatures seriously affect the strength of synthetic fiber ropes
by reducing it's strength.
.:
Natural fiber rope and twines will fray and be damaged if subjected
to rough surfaces.
.:
When stored,
natural fiber rope
and synthetic rope as well should be kept off
the floor, preferably on
racks to provide ventilation underneath it and keep it in good condition.
